FoMU or Fear of Meeting Up

Are your employees suffering from FoMU?As lockdown starts to be eased, there is a new phrase being bandied about - FoMU or ‘Fear of Meeting Up’. 

The phrase was originally coined by a dating app and basically means that people are nervous about resuming normal life again. Whilst this is predominantly aimed at social situations, the same could be said about professional settings.

There will be some employees who can’t wait for workplaces to reopen so that they can actually return to work or so they can see their colleagues again. However, for others there will be differing levels of anxiety that they will be facing.

There are a number of things you can do to help alleviate that anxiety.

  • Communicate, communicate, communicate. Talk to staff about the proposals to bring them back and listen to any fears they may have. 
  • Talk through the health and safety precautions you have put in place and you may even want to consider sending a short video of any office changes.
  • Try and give notice so that employees can mentally prepare themselves and get back into a new routine
  • Think about whether you need to run a short induction particularly for employees who have been furloughed.
  • Finally it might not be the right time for them to return. Discuss whether there are options to remain at home (or work from home) and review it on a regular basis.
